Oh, Amygdala
A Brief Foray Into Design
The well-known Amygdala have long carried a certain type of voided terms with them, or their existence. We know they are Great Ones, or one Great One, but we lack any knowledge of their purpose, or their goal. All Lesser and Greater Amygdala found on our path to enlightenment seem to either watch us with a type of disinterest - or outright attack us and attempt to halt what progress we seek. Turbulent behaviour, especially in the case of the Nightmare Frontier, or specifically the 'Amygdala's Chamber': it shows that they have an interest in goings on.
In our exploration of what seems to be the ruins of Loran trapped in a Dreamworld we are accosted by a Greater Amygdala and forced to kill it in order to survive. But what was it protecting, what use would it have in killing you? There is no prize, there is no 'progress' to be had once the deed is done. We simple walk into their place of habitance and are attacked in recompense, like an animal.
Perhaps the Amygdala are a sort of lower Great One, a watchdog for the beings who we know are truly in charge: Odeon, Kos, and the Moon Presence. That seems to logically be their purpose, to observe and treat with interest a foray into the goings on of man and their goal for ascension. Amygdalas are only found at places of worship: Oedon Chapel for one example. This could tell us that they act as messengers, or a place of contact for mankind. Proof of this is found in the multitude of depictions the Amygdalas have within man-made architecture. Visages of stone are found broken to their image within the entrance of the Grand Cathedral; a perfect replica of their whole form can be seen in Yhar'gul.
Whatever their purpose, they are a good starting point in our imagining of a 'true' great one, a being who has always been and will always be a 'superior lifeform'. Images will follow.
Left: Concept art of a Greater Amygdala, of which shows the inclusion of a sixth finger - something that most Kin share as proof of higher existence. This could be proof that all kin were hoping to achieve the form of Amygdala, and insinuate that perhaps all Amygdala do not act as a whole but are separate entities that all have achieved or been put into existence as a Great One: this form is the base appearance of an 'ascended being'.

Above left: Chest design, this opens up to reveal an orange glow.
Left: A Lesser Amygdala hanging of a church in Yhar'gul. This picture shows the occurrence of 'eyes' in the headpiece of an Amygdala. From all evidence seen, every Amygdala has this capability, only differing in whether the eyes come out during an attack or whether they are out permanently. This further cements the Amygdala as the standard for 'ascended being', as the inclusion of 'eyes on the inside' alludes to Provost Willem's preferred method; aka the only guy who was right to a degree.
Left: Lesser Amygdala transporting the player to a Dreamworld. This picture shows the head without the eyes visible, and also the start of the infamous sixth finger. The purpose of transporting hunters between Dreamworlds in unknown, especially since other Amygdalas attack you on sight. This could prove that Amygdalas are both indeed separate beings as well as mankind's contact with the Dream.
Amygdalas are some of the most interesting beings within Bloodborne, and I am sure to make more content theorising their presence in the future.
Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed.
